Cravings 101: I NEED A SALAD

Have you ever craved something sooo much that your body just feels deprived? Yea, that's me right now except it's not all the Easter chocolate I got. I'm craving good ole' fashion veggies.

I've noticed a few times in my life whenever I eat junk food for a few days that I get sluggish and well... drained. Afterwards, my body is starved of nutrients and I need some kale in my life. Has this happened to you? It's comparable to an itch in my leg whenever I've sat down for too long and then get the sudden urge to run. My body is literally screaming at me to get up and move. Over Easter weekend I binged on cheesecake, ham, steak, pancakes, alcohol, and TONS of other carbs. Currently my brain is yelling at me to nourish my body with something besides sugar and fat. You know what? Drinking a gallon of water sounds good too.

The thing I find odd is most of my friends never crave a handful of lettuce or spinach. Cravings are always associated with unhealthy foods. So why am I on the other end of the spectrum? I eat very healthy every day for the most part, and I think my body has just adapted from eating like a fat kid in high school to eating like an amateur vegan. Charles Spence, professor of experimental psychology at Oxford University, says that if you "execute the same change [a decrease in salt or sugar] over a longer period, very gradually, then we keep adapting." Only once in a blue moon do I ever eat fast food, and you'll never catch me ordering a pizza and wings for myself. Don't get me wrong. I love a good cheeseburger from Cookout, mozzarella sticks, Buffalo Wild Wings, and ice cream. You just don't see me eating it every day... or even every other day.

If there's one thing you can take away from this, I suppose it's:
  • Whenever your body yells at you, listen to it.
  • If I can adapt to eating mostly healthy and then craving healthy foods, so can you. You just have to train your mind to desire what is good for you.

Now excuse me while I make a food run to Wendy's and order myself a chicken salad.
