On the first day of creating my blog, I had no idea what I would write about. Something healthy? Probably. Something on wellness? Definitely. But what? After drinking a few too many Truly's it hit me. I immediately remembered why I choose not to drink a lot in the first place.
Everyone has one or two good friends they run to at certain times in their life. Need a wedding date? Jack Daniels will be there I'm sure. Do you need a pick-me-up after your significant other just left you? Samuel Adams can try and give you a warm hug. But here's the thing: alcohol is not your friend. I’m not saying drinking is the devil and should be avoided at all costs, but alcohol is definitely the friend to go behind your back and cause damage.
For Easter weekend I am quarantining on the beach in Wilmington, NC. One screwdriver (vodka + orange juice) down, and I'm ok. Add three Truly's to the mix in the East Coast heat, and we have ourselves a problem... or at least I did. I'm not one to drink a lot. I've never been a big drinker. My family history of alcoholism and seeing what it does to people probably has something to do with that. However, although I know the dire effects it can have, I'm not going to banish it from my life forever. I mean, c'mon. There's no sense in that.
This blog post idea came to me as I was sitting on the couch barely moving yet my heart was pounding rather hard in my chest. My normal resting heart rate is 62, and currently it’s 84. Statistics show that people with a prolonged heart rate over 80 have an increased risk of cardiovascular death. To me, that’s scary. With a stomach ache and slight dizziness, my resting heart beat of 84 made me remember why I don’t enjoy drinking a lot. Maybe it doesn’t bother you to feel sick, but it bothers me. I enjoy feeling healthy and strong, and right then I didn't.
So this post is a quick reminder as to why I, along with others, need to take it easy on my liver. By all means, drink to celebrate. Drink to forget. Just don’t drink your heart away. Drink in moderation. Don’t drink to where it jeopardizes your health.
On a side note, what's your favorite concoction? Do you have any recipes/go-to's? I love to try new drinks 😋
